Beatrice Wood was born in San Francisco in 1893. After studying and acting in Paris during her early twenties, Wood returned to New York in 1914 where she became romantically involved with Marcel Duchamp and associated with some of the preeminent thinkers, sages, and artists of the era. Wood's interest in pottery was aroused in 1933 by a set of antique luster plates. She studied ceramics in the 30's and 40's and developed a unique personal style, going on to receive numerous honors as one of the major ceramicists of the 20th century. Her work became increasingly daring and experimental throughout her lifetime, leading to the creation- when she was in her ninties- of what are now considered her signature pieces: tall, complex chalices in glittering greens, pinks, and bronzes. Until shortly before her death in 1998, she produced several solo exhibitions each year.
