"Song Dynasty" Bottles
(Thrown by Dane Venaas)

These five large collaborative vases were inspired both in form and decoration by the beautiful bottle forms from the Song Dynasty (960 - 1279). They are all wheel thrown by Dane Venaas and designed and carved by Lauren Hanson. The carving technique is known as sgraffito and involves scratching through black slip to reveal the contrasting clay color underneath.

The Water Carriers

"I have always been taken with the Classic Greek pots depicting women at the cistern with vessels on their heads. With our current concerns about drought, it seemed timely to do something about the preciousness of water. These women, who have to carry water across distances certainly knew about that. I also enjoy the sense of camaraderie between the women. In India and in Africa women still carry water in this way. If you look closely at the African Water Carriers pot you will see some plastic buckets and Western shoes amongst the traditional dress and pottery.”

Contemplating Fruit

"Adam and Eve, Persephone and Hades — Classic Tales open to many interpretations. The facial expressions leave the thoughts and motivations of the characters open for the viewer to tell the story. As with most of my work, you may see art historical references."

The Mermaid Tribe

"I have often used mermaid imagery in my work. I think of them as ocean mascots or ‘Save our Seas’ advocates. They are often seen praying for the ocean. All the mugs have tail handles that merge into the carving of a mermaid swirling around the mug."

Outdoor Art

"I began this latest body of work made after my last show at Beato Gallery with pieces for the outdoors. In the midst of an eight-year drought, the landscaping around my house was becoming depressingly withered. As I was replacing plants with drought-tolerant varieties, it occurred to me that ceramics could offer a water-saving way to add color and interest into the garden."

Sgraffito Carving in Clay
Workshop with Lauren Hanson

Sunday, May 27, 2018 / 1:00 - 4:00 pm

In conjunction with the exhibition Inside/Outside, ceramic artist Lauren Hanson will be presenting a hands-on afternoon workshop sharing her techniques for carving imagery and designs using the sgraffito technique. The artist will provide wheel-thrown “leather-hard” ceramic cups that will be ideal for carving, as well as tools. The cups will be covered with black slip, so that the carved areas will contrast with the color of the clay.
