Greetings from Happy Valley, where we're exhibiting art, workshop participants are creating wonderful work, college and university interns are expanding their knowledge of the art world, and visitors are painting on canvases in connection with our current collaborative art project. I'm writing to make certain that you are aware of a very special exhibition that is opening next weekend, as it presents an opportunity to view and collect the work of a uniquely talented ceramic artist.

Lauren Hanson: Illustrative Ceramics will be presented from July 5th - August 17th. The artist's works are born of an early grounding in drawing, painting, and art history. While her approach is considerably different than Beatrice Wood, Hanson finds that they have many similarities, as she too came to ceramics relatively late in life, and has a passion for nature, art books, the human condition, vegetarianism, and of course, chocolate. In Hanson's work, these interests are etched and painted on traditional ceramic forms, reflecting and celebrating the natural world, with scenes featuring birds, plants and trees wrapped around vessel forms.

The Opening Reception will be on Saturday, July 5th from 2 - 5 pm

All Together Now: The Art of Collaboration

July 5 - August 17, 2014

All Together Now: The Art of Collaboration
Collaborative Paintings in Progress

During the months of June and July, the Beatrice Wood Center for the Arts is staging an "ART-IN", inviting visitors and members of the community to collaborate on paintings, collage and assemblage. Completed works, along with those in process, will be presented in the exhibition All Together Now: The Art of Collaboration from July 5th - August 17th, with proceeds from sales supporting the Center's educational programming.

This event and exhibition are designed to promote collaboration, creativity and community as a means of creating constructive change in the human condition and the planet. It is based on surrealist techniques for utilizing random chance to work free of conscious control, as well as Eastern approaches to non-attachment. As part of our educational programming, it will serve to introduce individuals to artistic processes and is open to everyone, from professional artists to "non-artists".

We are very happy with the recent article by Judith Tannenbaum about Beatrice Wood and the Center in the June issue of CeramicsTECHNICAL. You can read it by clicking the link below, but I suggest getting a copy of the magazine or - if you are a ceramic artist - subscribing.

Last, but certainly not least, I want to remind everyone that the support of individuals who believe in our work is vital to the Center's survival. We're pleased to announce a second matching funds grant from the Windgate Charitable Foundation that begins on July 1st, with Windgate matching every contribution dollar for dollar up to $25,000. Anything you can give toward supporting our educational programming, exhibitions and performances will be greatly appreciated.
