Hawai'i-nei comes to Beatrice Wood Center for the Arts with an afternoon of performances. Kamaka Brown will act as Master of Ceremonies for a show that features Aunty Geri Kuhia, who sings in the old Hawaiian style. Soft, sweet and melodious, Aunty Geri’s voice is from another time and place, reminiscent of the iconic vocalists of last century's Hawaii. She will be joined by Kimo Williams, as well as Rona Koe and her dancers. The Center will be transformed into Old Hawaii, with guitar, ukulele, singing and dancing. Join us for this outdoor performance on the back patio of the Center on the Hawaiian island called Ojai.

Aunty Geri KuhiaReflecting her North Shore of O'ahu roots, Aunty Geri Kuhia brings back the classic traditional music first made popular by Genoa Keawe, Lena Machado, and other singers from a generation mostly gone but not forgotten. Aunty Geri was a featured artist in Bernard MacMahon's The American Epic Sessions which focused on the first root music recordings in the USA. The project produced by Jack White and T Bone Burnett replicated 1920s recording sessions with 23 artists recording live on original 1920s equipment, in back-to-back sessions, just as the original performers would have done 100 years before. Kuhia's singing voice was chosen to represent Hawai'i in the sessions. In years past Aunty Geri toured with legendary Hawaiian performer Danny Kaleikini in Japan and sang for many years at the annual week-long Merrie Monarch Festival in Hilo founded by George Na'ope. As Slack Guitar Master Patrick Landeza has noted, "Aunty Geri is the link to our heritage and culture. She is a Hawaiian music treasure that continues to inspire us all."

Kimo WilliamsKimo Williams is a singer/songwriter and Hawaiian slack key guitarist who has performed in concert at numerous venues across Southern California. Born and raised in Hawai'i, Kimo's love for Hawaiian music started at a young age. While he has a full set of the most beautiful and popular island standards from artists such as Brothers Cazimero, Rev. Dennis Kamakahi, Cecilio & Kapono, his pop singing style is reminiscent of the folk/rock artists that put the California sound on the map. His range may be versatile but his tone is always clear. He will share music from his latest release titled Lei of Hawai'i.

Rona Koe (with Guitarist Ken Emerson)Rona Koe is a hula instructor (kumu hula) for her Hawaiian dance school (halau) called Halau Hula O Pualanina`auali`ioha. She has been dancing, teaching, performing, and competing for well over 20 years. Her Hawaiian dance training and teaching is from the lineage of Haina Kalehualaha`ole Blaisdell, Kawaikapuokalani K. Hewett, and Sylvia Puanani Edgar. Her mission is to maintain and preserve the foundation of hula and the lineage that has been handed down to her. She includes in her teachings education and perpetuation of the Hawaiian culture and dance in its purest form through dance, music, arts and crafts, and lecture. Koe and members of her Camarillo based halau will join in dance adding beauty to the afternoon’s performance.
