Upcoming Workshop

Rika Purotu Traxler
Join us for this workshop with Rika "Purotu" Traxler, focusing on traditions from the islands of Tahiti, including creating a hei upo'o (flower crown) made with fresh flowers. Traditionally worn on a daily basis to adorn and beautify oneself in public in Tahiti and many other Polynesian islands, it is now created and worn for special occasions and outings. Traditionally created from local flowers and whatever is available, including ti leaves to block the sun, the flower crowns are also used to decorate weaved pandanus hats as well.

Participants will then learn to tie a sarong - pareu tying as it's referred to in Tahiti - a tradition of tying a piece of cloth around around the body to make into clothing. While there are over 100 ways to tie one piece of cloth, Traxler will be sharing how to tie it in ten different ways.
"The pareu is the most sustainable piece of cloth in the world as it can be made into beautiful dresses, pants, tops and even a bathing suit," Traxler says. "Let’s get creative with pareus!"
The workshop will culminate with instruction in basic dance movements from Tahiti - the hip motions and basic footwork and the difference between aparima dance and o'tea (drum dance). Participants will be able to incorporate these techniques into their own practice or exercises, providing a wonderful workout that is particularly great for stiff joints.

No experience necessary.
