The Cutting Edge: Contemporary Wood Art and The Lipton Collection
August 13 - September 18, 2011 / Beato Gallery

Hugh McKay
(United States, born 1951)

Landscapes are a great source for new ideas to express in sculpture. I love the coastline - a place where two separate worlds meet and come together in the most interesting ways. I try to combine different materials in the same fashion.”

Provenance: The Lipton Collection

Hugh McKay set up his own wood shop in 1979, intending to make his living as a furniture maker. He soon became absorbed with the expressive potential of woodturning and began exhibiting his sculptural vessels in 1984. These works showed an expansive interest in materials, initially featuring wood and later cast glass. This interest in cast glass and the artist's innovative nature ultimately led him to abandon wood and open a glass foundry.
