Children's Art Workshops

The Beatrice Wood Center for the Arts and Happy Valley Cultural Center is pleased to announce a series of workshops for children, to be held the first Saturday of every month. The workshops will be led by Seda Sevada and will introduce children to a wide range of media and processes. In many cases the workshops will involve artists-in-residence at the Center, or special guests, providing unique opportunities for expansive experience with the arts. The workshops are being offered free of charge and space is limited. For more information on this program, please contact the Center at 805-646-3381 or artcenter@beatricewood.com.

Seda Sevada was raised in a family of artists. Her father was the founder of an art school for children in her hometown of Abovyan, Armenia, and her mother worked as a teacher and curator at the local art museum. As a child, Seda attended classes, lectures, and workshops at her father's school.
"Art was not separate from life," she says of her upbringing. "It was life."
Migrating to the United States as a teenager, Seda continued to explore the arts. She became involved in the performing arts/dance and earned a degree in Art History at California State University, Northridge. This led her to work at art galleries, where she encountered a number of amazingly talented artists who believed that creativity has no boundaries. Yet it wasn't until motherhood that she met her true teachers in life - her children.

"Children are WHOLE human beings who are carved of simplicity and love," she says. "They have thoughts and feelings that must be allowed to unfold. Our work as parents - and adults - is not necessarily to teach, but to guide children in their development."
While Seda initially believed that, once her children were older, she would return to the world of galleries and museums, she is now committed to a life sharing the arts with children.
"The real seers and observers of the world are children," she says. "They are creative every second if we only notice it. Art offers a wonderful opportunity for all of us to see that there are countless possibilities in life. Allowing children to express what is already there is a gift - not only for them but for each of us and our shared future."

Our workshops and classes all take place at the Beatrice Wood Center for the Arts (driving directions).
